Who is Tri Sigma?

It is our belief that today’s society needs strong women leaders, and Pennsylvania State University is a place where empowered, courageous, and intelligent women can come together to impact the world through membership in Sigma Sigma Sigma. We are seeking women with these qualities to re-establish our chapter of Tri Sigma at Penn State this Spring.

Sigma Sigma Sigma was founded by a group of eight women in Farmville, Virginia who set out to establish a sisterhood based on the bond of friendship. From our earliest days, we have sought out others to accompany us on our journey, and we are ready to welcome women at the Penn State to join us!

We hope that you will feel empowered to impact the world through friendships, character, and conduct with Tri Sigma!

Our History

Sigma Sigma Sigma was founded on April 20, 1898 at the State Female Normal School (now Longwood University) in Virginia. Our eight founders Margaret Lee Batten, Louise Marie Davis, Martha Trent Featherston, Isabella Merrick, Sallie Jackson Michie, Lelia Scott, Elizabeth Watkins and Lucy Wright believed in the special bonds of close friendship and sisterhood. Tri Sigma is one of four sororities founded at this institution, becoming a part of a group known as the "Farmville Four"

Our Mission

To establish among its members a perpetual bond of friendship, to develop in them strong womanly character, and to impress upon them high standards of conduct.

Our Vision

Sigma Sigma Sigma will provide exceptional experiences that will empower women to change the world.

Our Values

Wisdom, Power, Faith, Hope, & Love

Our Philanthropic Focus

Sigma Serves Children is our philanthropic initiative to benefit children’s health. We commit to serve children and their families who need hope, compassion and the promise of a better tomorrow. We aim to make a positive impact in the lives of children facing medical challenges, sometimes life and death. In 2016, we broadened support to focus on premature births and formed a partnership with March of Dimes to help moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies.
